GILL STANDS FIRM ON RONALDO

Manchester United chief executive David Gill is adamant that Real Madrid target Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale.

Real are refusing to give up on their pursuit of the Portuguese star, with club president Ramon Calderon determined to lure him to the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo's future has been dominating the headlines all summer with the midfielder refusing to rule out a move away from Old Trafford.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Ronaldo off making a move to Madrid saying it would be a mistake and now Gill says United have told the Spanish side they have no plans to sell the skilful attacker.

He told Sky Sports News: "We made it clear to them [Real Madrid] from day one we wouldn't welcome a bid, it wouldn't be accepted and therefore I don't think there is not much point in putting one in.

"That's where we are at with the situation.

"Obviously there has been lots of paper talk and a lot of coverage in the media about it and we understand that.

"But the reality of it is we have been very firm from day one."

ALEX FERGUSON admitted last night: I have made life hard for Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United boss consistently played his England hitman out of position last season as the club won the Premier League and Champions League.

Fergie accepts the star’s goal tally suffered as a result.

But now the Scot is ready to turn Rooney

into a major threat once more by using him as a central striker.

Ferguson conceded: “I think I have to take a bit of responsibility.

“He has sacrificed himself and never complained about it, which says a lot for the lad.

“We have to define his role a bit better for us. I think his best position is through the middle, either in a front role or tucking in just behind.

"He can play either role very well. He is aggressive, uses two feet, has good pace and the courage to go in the box. There’s no reason why he can’t get a good supply of goals.”

Rooney, 22, scored 18 times for United in 2007-08. But he did not hit the heights of previous campaigns and only last weekend Brazilian legend Pele questioned whether he had shown enough improvement over the last four years.

Ferguson paid Everton £26million for Rooney and remains convinced the fee will turn out to be good value.

He added: “At 22, he was never going to be the finished article. We signed him at 18 for his potential, which is why we paid £26m for him. It’s for the long term. In a few years’ time, we will be saying that’s really brilliant business.

“Last season we played him wide and in other positions at times. It’s great credit to the lad that he never complains.

"It’s fair to say that if the player moaned you would have to review the situation then.

“It does happen that some players know their best position and don’t want to challenge themselves in another position. Rooney is prepared to challenge himself in another position. He would play centre-half.

“But he will score goals. He scored a couple against Aston Villa after not scoring for seven or eight games and I thought that would have catapulted him into a good run. But we kept using him in different positions.”

Fergie headed off for his summer holiday in France basking in the glory of United’s double.

Yet it did not take too many days in his deckchair before he was already counting down to the new campaign, where he expects the challengers to his league crown to be the same three clubs — Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Ferguson declared: “When that fixture list came into the hotel on the fax machine. Jesus, what a start that is.

“Portsmouth, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle. In the first half of the season, we’ve all the top half of the league away from home.

“The four at the top will be at the top again. I’m trying to see whether someone can break in and can’t see anyone.

“I wouldn’t write off Liverpool or Arsenal. Arsenal had a good start and that carried right through until they had some injuries.

“It has been understated what Arsenal did last season, because they got injuries at a bad time. In February they lost most of their midfield and also Eduardo.

"Who is to say it wouldn’t have been closer if Arsene Wenger had kept his players fit?”

United are just one short of Liverpool’s 18 league titles, though Fergie insists equalling that is not a big issue.

He said: “You have to respect Liverpool. But every time I come up against them the hackles go up at the back of my neck. You know this is a real game. That won’t change.

“But I don’t think about equalling Liverpool’s 18 titles. It’s not a motivation at all.”

This season Ferguson will lock horns across Manchester with new City boss and one-time Old Trafford favourite Mark Hughes.

There have been rumours owner Thaksin Shinawatra interfered in Sven Goran Eriksson’s selection and recruitment policy and Fergie believes it will soon become a common occurrence.

But he is backing Hughes to do well after leaving Blackburn for Eastlands.

He insisted: “Sparky is a great choice. He has done his time at Blackburn and proved himself. It was time for him to move on.

“But you are going to get interference more and more from a manager’s point of view.

“I think there are signs of that. The guy who owns Hearts takes the team out, for instance.”

Ferguson wants to see his side take a bit of inspiration from Open winner Padraig Harrington as they look to repeat last season’s heroics.

He praised Harrington for the way he retained his title at Royal Birkdale and has challenged his stars to show similar drive and ambition in the months ahead.

Speaking about winning major events back to back, Fergie said: “It is terribly difficult.

“Harrington, however, was so cool and showed me he had the bottle. When he needed to perform over the last six holes, he had four birdies.

His second shot at the 17th, right on the pin . . . . unbelievable. He thoroughly deserved the victory.”

Retaining the Champions League and bagging a hat-trick of Premier League wins would be a magnificent achievement.

And Ferguson claimed: “It can be done. It is a challenge for us but there is nothing wrong with challenges. They are good for you.”

Guys... a shocking news..!!!

FERGIE REFUSES TO DISMISS HENRY LINK

Sir Alex Ferguson still intends to buy a new striker this week - and has failed to rule out a shock move for Thierry Henry.

With Louis Saha written out of his plans and Wayne Rooney only just returned to training after picking up a virus in Nigeria, the Manchester United boss had only Carlos Tevez to call on for Sunday's Community Shield win over Portsmouth at Wembley.

Tevez responded with a man-of-the-match display containing everything but a goal as United triumphed in a penalty shoot-out.

But Ferguson admits getting a forward in time for Sunday's Barclays Premier League opener with Newcastle is now a pressing concern.

"It has been pressing since the end of last season," said the Scot.

"We like to operate with four strikers and we have not been able to do that."

There is bound to be fresh speculation over a move for Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov, while Karim Benzema, David Villa and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have also been linked with Old Trafford over the last few months.

Henry's name has just been added to that list despite the 31-year-old's obvious link with Arsenal.

Tellingly, it was an issue Ferguson chose to skirt round rather than reject.

"There is a name every day," he said.

"I can't answer the question because I don't have the right answer.

"It is possible I will sign someone this week. We are trying and we are looking at one or two options.

"Hopefully we will get something done."

Guys.. latest news... and err... Robinho skang masuk Man City..at fees £32.5m...

BERBATOV SEALS UNITED MOVE

Dimitar Berbatov has signed a four-year deal with Manchester United.

One of the summer's longest-running transfers was finally concluded tonight, with Fraizer Campbell going to Tottenham in a year-long loan.

United have not confirmed how much they have paid for the 27-year-old but Tottenham confirmed they had agreed a fee of £30.75million.

As part of the deal, Tottenham have agreed not to pursue a complaint against United for making an illegal approach to the player.

Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted after finally getting his man.

"This is a key signing," the United boss told www.manutd.com.

"Dimitar is one of the best and most exciting strikers in world football.

"His style and ability will give the team a different dimension and I am sure he will be a popular player with the fans."

Berbatov says he's now looking forward to becoming a United legend.

"Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me," he said.

"I look forward to playing my part in helping this club win more honours in the years to come."

After a breathless afternoon, in which Berbatov spent time at United's Carrington training complex and then Old Trafford, he was then taken to a south Manchester hospital for a medical.

With no problems reported, he returned to Old Trafford, where he was greeted warmly by Ferguson and chief executive David Gill to begin the long wait to see if a deal could be done that would eventually see Berbatov wear the number nine shirt vacated by Louis Saha, following the Frenchman's sale to Everton.

Forty minutes before the deadline expired, United submitted papers to the Premier League, hoping the registration would go through in time.

For Ferguson, Berbatov's arrival was a matter of extreme urgency.

While United were always confident Manchester City would be seen off as potential bidders, Ferguson knew he needed another senior striker.

The Scot has won the last two Premier League titles, and the Champions League a man light of his preferred four-pronged forward line.

And he knew this time around, there would be no surprise signing such as Henrik Larsson to help the Red Devils out, or an unexpected seam of goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, or, due to his current injury, 42 from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fraizer Campbell might have impressed in pre-season but Ferguson realised it was too much to expect the youngster to hold down a regular place should either Wayne Rooney or Carlos Tevez be ruled out for an extended period.

And, though other targets such as Michael Owen, Thierry Henry and David Villa were mentioned, Berbatov was the man Ferguson kept returning to.

At 27, Berbatov is slightly older than most of United's recent major purchases but Ferguson feels his silky touch - which the Scot first experienced when Bayer Leverkusen faced the Red Devils in Champions League combat five years ago.

Ferguson believes Berbatov has the quality to score goals himself and create chances for others.

Some may question the player's temperament in light of his recent behaviour but Ferguson has worked with plenty of highly-strung individuals, including Eric Cantona, and got the best out of them.

He will expect to do the same with Berbatov, starting when United travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on September 13.

LONDON - Penantian panjang penyerang Bulgaria, Dimitar Berbatov berakhir lewat semalam apabila dia disahkan menjadi milik juara Eropah dan Liga Perdana England, Manchester United.

"Menyertai Manchester United umpama mimpi menjadi nyata buat saya.

- Reuters

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on veteran midfielder Paul Scoles after he scored the opening goal in Wednesday night's victory over Fulham.

The 3-0 win sent the Red Devils five points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with Sir Alex praising the 34-year-old's contribution.

Well.. it was a frustating game indeed.. its been very long time since MU kalau kt tpt sendiri sebanyak 4-1 ... rasa2 last dlm tahun 1972++

but indeed.. gotta salute the Reds for their performance... MU got pawned!!!

with Nemanja Vidic errors and that's whut lead to their poor performance..

and pairing Anderson with Carrick?.. huhu.. not a gud pairing..

shud be... Scholes - Carrick or Anderson - Carrick or even let Giggs play with Park Ji Sung and Scholes in the middle..

And never put O' Shea on the right.. we need Rafael..

Come on all Red Devil's fans.. let us rise up and support our team.. Vidic will not be available.. but we still have Evans..

PRESSURE OFF UNITED NOW - CHARLTON

Manchester United great Sir Bobby Charlton hopes the humiliating defeat by Liverpool can prove a blessing in disguise.

The Barclays Premier League champions were thrashed 4-1 by their rivals at Old Trafford on Saturday, a result which ended a run of 11 successive wins and kept the title race alive.

But with a four-point lead at the top and a game in hand, United remain firm favourites - and Charlton believes the shock loss can spur them on.

Charlton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "I think there was just a little bit of stress, because we kept on winning matches.

"It helps to maybe turn the gas down a little bit, and a lot of pressure's maybe eased. I'm hoping we're going to do better because of this result.

"It wasn't a result anybody at Manchester United could be proud of, but you have to say Liverpool played really well and deserved to win."

It was United's heaviest home defeat since losing by the same scoreline to QPR in 1992, but Charlton has no doubt manager Sir Alex Ferguson will soon pick the side up.

"He will make sure they get their confidence back," he added.

"It's a bit of a blow - to lose four goals at home hasn't been done for so many years. There's bit of pride been hurt there, but I don't think he'll have to work too hard to rejuvenate them.

"But work he will. Getting to the end of the season, all matches are important. When the next one comes along next week I'm sure he'll be ready for it."

United remain on course to win a remarkable quintuple this season. The Club World Cup and Carling Cup are already in the bag - while they are also through to the last eight of the Champions League and semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Charlton, who won the European Cup with United in 1968, believes the current squad could go on to prove Old Trafford's greatest ever.

He said: "It is a very good squad with a lot of good players.

"I think maybe if they win the Champions League you could say that is maybe the best squad that's been here."

On the possibility of winning five trophies, he added: "It would be absolutely sensational and if any club were ever able to do it it would be the greatest achievement any club has ever had. But we don't have any targets other than the next match."

- AFP

Manchester United kekal di puncak liga

LONDON - Dua jaringan Fernando Torres membantu Liverpool membelasah Blackburn 4-0, namun gagal memintas kedudukan Manchester United selaku pendahulu Liga Perdana England, semalam.

- Reuters

Man utd tak layak mendabik dada terlalu awal. apa-apa pun, mereka tetap tewas dengan kita di Old Trafford

"it is not goal to be calculate at the end, but the point!"

- Agensi

MAN UNITED'S GREATEST PREMIER LEAGUE XI

Goalkeeper: Peter Schmeichel

The irrepressible Dane was arguably the best goalkeeper in Premier League history and perhaps beyond. An imposing figure, Schmeichel was worth 15 points per season to United. Such was his importance it took United until the signing of Edwin van der Sar in 2005 to find his replacement. Five Premier League titles culminated in the treble success of 1999 before leaving Old Trafford for Sporting Lisbon.

Right-back: Gary Neville

Neville became first-choice right-back in 1994 and lives and breathes the club. He was handed the captain's armband following Roy Keane's departure. Another treble winner, injuries have curtailed his progress over the last couple of seasons but could always be relied upon for club and country. His time in the first team may be coming to a close, but Neville has been noticeable in taking pre-match warm-ups with the first team in recent weeks and it would be no surprise if he ended up on United's coaching staff.

Left-back: Denis Irwin

Irwin proved to be a fine piece of business by Sir Alex Ferguson when he arrived from Oldham for £625,000 in 1990. Seven Premier League titles would follow for the Republic of Ireland international who was as convincing going forward as he was fierce at the back. Free-kicks were another speciality for Irwin, who would go on to make over 350 appearances for the club. Was equally adept on the right side of the defence as he was on the left.

Centre-back: Rio Ferdinand

Ferdinand has had his critics during his time at Old Trafford but has developed into a class act for both club and country. He is strong in the air, composed on the floor and has formed a fantastic partnership with Serbian colleague Nemanja Vidic. His performances over the last three seasons - as United reclaimed their place at the top of the Premier League - give him the edge over stalwarts Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce.

Centre-back: Jaap Stam

The big Dutchman anchored the club to the treble in his first season and followed it up with two more titles during his three-season stay in Manchester. His acrimonious departure saw Laurent Blanc arrive as a replacement and United's back line looked a shadow of its former self as Arsenal went on to do the double in 2001-02. Stam was, in short, a colossus at the back and while it can be argued the Premier League wasn't at its most competitive during his time, he also edges Fergie's old guard of Pallister and Bruce.

Right midfield: Cristiano Ronaldo

Plenty has been written about United's latest legendary number seven and his 42-goal haul on the way to last season's Premier League and Champions League honours also helped earn him the World Footballer of the Year award. Such was the magnitude of that campaign that 25 goals this term has been seen in many quarters as disappointing. Ronaldo justifiably takes his place ahead of David Beckham, strong in the air, lightning on the break and in with every chance of becoming one of football's all-time greats.

Left midfield: Ryan Giggs

Giggs continues to rewrite the history books and shows no signs of slowing down, being named the PFA Player of the Year this season. He made his 800th appearance in the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal and has looked rejuvenated in a central midfield role. With 11 Premier League titles to his name, he has also scored in every season of the competition. The sight of Giggs flying down the wing once drew comparisons with the great George Best, but Giggs is a fully-fledged legend in his own right.

Central midfield: Roy Keane

Few thought there would ever be a replacement for Bryan Robson when 'Captain Marvel' finally walked out of Old Trafford with his own status as a legend intact. Ferguson found one in Keane, a box-to-box marauder with fire in his belly - a leader of men on the pitch. Paul Ince also excelled but Keane stood above with his sheer will-to-win and no-nonsense approach. His old mentor Robson, however, would have had something to say about it had he been born 10 years later.

Central midfield: Paul Scholes

When the likes of Zinedine Zidane cite you as one of the best players he ever played against, you're doing something right. Scholes is as far removed off the pitch from the modern-day image of a flash footballer as you can get but is still capable of fireworks on it. Free-scoring in his day, his range of passing and ability to keep things simple yet devastatingly effective prove the Frenchman's point. Along with Giggs, not just a special footballer, but a role model for any young footballer in an age where excess seems to be valued over success.

Centre-forward: Eric Cantona

Le Dieu is still arguably the greatest player to grace the Premier League - at least until Ronaldo puts in a few more seasons. Arsenal fans may point to Thierry Henry's contribution but Cantona not only transformed United on the pitch, he inspired the golden generation of Beckham, Scholes and Giggs into fulfilling their potential too. A legend and an icon, blessed with sublime touch, vision and the deadly finish of a predator. His almost single-handed march towards the 1995-96 title following his infamous ban and FA Cup final winner against Liverpool summed Cantona up to a tee.

Centre-forward: Wayne Rooney

Likely to be a controversial choice due to the number of goals scored by the prolific Ruud van Nistelrooy, but with no David Beckham in the side to feed the Dutchman, Rooney gets the nod. He is a manager's dream, always willing to sacrifice his natural instincts for the good of the team and deadly with the ball at his feet. The success of the current United side owes a lot to the graft, craft and guile of the former Evertonian. He would be perfect either playing off Cantona in his natural role up top or tucking out wide to allow Ronaldo to run riot through the middle.

Barcelona are champions of Europe!

Manchester United discovered what it is like to lose a European Cup final as brilliant Barcelona ruled Rome with a 2-0 win.

If there is any consolation in failure to become the first side to retain the trophy in the Champions League era, it is that they lost to a side as fluent and brilliant to watch as they are.

Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi scored the goals either side of half-time but to single those two out for special praise would be unfair on their team-mates, and particularly Xavi, who was simply awesome.

For once Cristiano Ronaldo could provide no magic of his own, instead getting increasingly frustrated as defeat loomed.

It was a shame really. Although having done so much damage to others down the years, he does now know how it feels.

Twenty four hours earlier, Sir Alex Ferguson had spoken of reaching into the far corners of his brain for an inspiring word or two prior to kick-off.

As half-time approached, that same grey matter might have preferred a word or two about Barcelona's performance.

Sublime would have been one. Bewitching, mesmerising would do equally as well. For a football man like Ferguson it would have been a joy to watch if his side were not the ones trying to stop it.

The kind of football that allowed the Catalans to hit six goals past Real Madrid at the Bernabeu Stadium last month was not in evidence for the first eight minutes or so as United held sway.

However, once it began to emerge, Ferguson's side had precious few answers.

The shape of the contest might have been so different had Park Ji-sung been able to snaffle the rebound after Victor Valdes had failed to hold a stinging Ronaldo free-kick.

Instead, former United man Gerard Pique shot across to block what proved to be his old club's best opportunity of that opening period.

Like his team, Ronaldo was clearly in the ascendancy in his personal duel with Messi.

How rapidly things changed. In the twinkling of an eye Andres Iniesta, one of the brightest starts in the Barcelona firmament, slipped a pass to Eto'o.

[center:6e4c8b5eff]http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/megatfrq/Arsenal/Action/275643_95_preview.jpg[/center:6e4c8b5eff]

The Cameroon striker cut inside Nemanja Vidic, then held off Michael Carrick as he prodded the ball goalward with enough strength to take it past Edwin van der Sar.

[center:6e4c8b5eff]http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/megatfrq/Arsenal/Action/275647_95_preview.jpg[/center:6e4c8b5eff]

Suddenly the strategy of containment and hitting at pace on the counter-attack suggested by the inclusion of Park and the exclusion of Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov did not look such a good idea.

Ferguson's team shot across the pitch, able to do little more than firefight as Messi, Iniesta and Xavi lit bonfires all around.

Had a Messi flick found Eto'o in the area, it would have probably brought Barcelona's second. Rio Ferdinand's agility saved his team.

Xavi curled a free-kick just wide, Vidic pumped the ball away after Van der Sar had failed to hold a cross shot, the slick passing wearing United down all the while.

The arrival of Tevez at half-time had to come, and with it a more overtly offensive approach.

Yet in taking such bold action, Ferguson knew he was playing right into Barcelona's hands.

Xavi picked out Thierry Henry with a brilliant pass. The former Arsenal star cut inside Ferdinand with ease but could not find the finish, a similar mistake to the one that proved so costly for Arsenal in Paris three years ago.

When Xavi saw his free-kick come thumping back off a post, memories of 1999 and the mauling United nearly took at the hands of Bayern Munich sprang to mind.

Yet this was different. Ferguson's team were poor until the unforgettable ending. This time they were simply ripped apart by the only team on the planet who can match them.

The introduction of Berbatov midway through the second half was effectively Ferguson throwing his book of tactics out of the window and not worry about the consequences if it all went wrong.

Sadly it did. Quite quickly as Xavi's curling cross dropped perfectly for Messi, who guided his header over Van der Sar.

[center:6e4c8b5eff]http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/megatfrq/Arsenal/Action/messi1.jpg[/center:6e4c8b5eff]

[center:6e4c8b5eff]http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/megatfrq/Arsenal/Action/messi2.jpg[/center:6e4c8b5eff]

[center:6e4c8b5eff]http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/megatfrq/Arsenal/Action/messi3.jpg[/center:6e4c8b5eff]

Ronaldo's world player of the year crown was slipping and Valdes managed to get in the way of a close-range effort that would have given United some hope, as would the volley from Berbatov that followed.

Berbatov had another chance too, although by then Carles Puyol had seen two efforts saved by Van der Sar.

In truth, the Dutchman was his side's best player, which just about says it all.

[center:6e4c8b5eff]http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll170/megatfrq/Arsenal/Action/275704_95_preview.jpg[/center:6e4c8b5eff]
